Have You "Benefitted" This Year?
Lumineers®: The Painless, Permanent, Porcelain Veneers
Last Spring, our office became a certified provider for the Lumineers® Porcelain Veneer System, which offers a permanent, pain-free alternative to standard porcelain veneers and full coverage porcelain crowns. While the cost is considerably higher than tradition porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns (and a bit higher than traditional porcelain veneers), Lumineers® come with a 5-year guarantee from Den-Mat Corporation, which has moved to the forefront of the dental scientific community with it's incredibly resilient porcelain composition and the strongest dentin-bonding cements on the market. If you're looking for a change in your smile, Hollywood, Virginia has come to your home. Read the article "You Can Have a Hollywood Smile" below and give us a call!
Christmas Music Memories Can Live Forever
I tried to get a copy of this "O" article into the newsletter in time to print before our concert series, but I just couldn't get my hands on it. Fear not... There's still plenty of time after you read it to hear some really beautiful music during the holidays. (See first article above.)
Written by Oliver Sacks, M.D., the noted neurologist and author, "Wired for Sound" describes the profound bond between music and our brains, and how the simple act of singing can be good medicine - especially as we age. For those who have friends or loved-ones with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease... basically most any neurological condition of the brain, this article is a "must read," especially this time of year. Music, it is believed, is also good mental exercise, since it utilizes several areas of the brain. Please read it to the end. Enjoy... And "O," it's just a one click away!
(Speaking of Christmas Music, I wish to personally thank all of those who attended the VB Chorale's Christmas Concert at Sandler and/or our Christmas Cantata at VBCC. A special thank you goes out to all who brought and did not throw a tomato!)
Time is Running Out for "15%-off Dentistry"
We are pleased to announce two special holiday programs which began this month, December 2008:
(1) We're cleaning off our shelves! Just visit our office to schedule an appointment, make a payment, receive dental treatment (or even to use our restroom), and patients of record can select one "take home holiday dental gift" while supplies last. Among the items available are Water-Piks, Oral-B Hummingbirds, Crest Spin Brushes, Colgate Toothbrushes, Paste & Floss, Squirtbrushes and Dr. Matt's favorite… J&J Dentotape. Sorry but, if you want one, and because we sometimes forget, you're going to have to remind us or just ask for it!
(2) A special "Discounted Payment Program" is being tested from December 1, 2008 through December 1, 2009, offering patients and responsible parties the option to deduct as much as 15% from their balances when paid in full. Terms and conditions vary for each discount type. For more information, please visit our web page at http://www.hogendobler.com/finance.htm and click on the link to the downloadable document. You may have heard an older person humorously referred to as being “long in the tooth.” This old idiom refers to a way to determine the age (and decreased value) of a horse because its gums recede as it ages. First and foremost, it is a myth that receding gums is a natural part of the human aging process. Second, your teeth stopped growing when you were young. Receding gums might be funny on a horse, but they are no laughing matter to an elderly person. Being called long in the tooth is unflattering, but most importantly, it can indicate that you have a serious dental problem. If you have noticed over time that your crowns seem to be getting longer, it is wise to have us examine your teeth to rule out any existing problem that needs to be corrected so that you do not risk losing your teeth.

Energy drinks are a $10 billion business, and you are getting more than your money’s worth of energy. You are getting tooth decay from the corrosive acids in those drinks. Dental erosion and decay occurs when acids leach calcium and phosphorous out of your tooth’s enamel, the strong cover that protects the visible part of your tooth. Dental erosion is irreversible. Once the enamel is gone, it is gone forever. Dental erosion is an epidemic amongst our youth because their teeth are not yet hard enough to withstand constant acid attacks.

These are exciting times for anyone who has considered improving their smile. Yesterday, many people thought that only Hollywood movie stars could get dazzling smiles, but today people know that anyone can enhance the smile that Mother Nature gave them. Just look at the results of a recent survey of several thousand dentists. They are eye-opening. It perhaps is not so surprising that more women than men are changing their smiles—67 percent to 33 percent. What catches the eye is the number of men who are jumping into the smile makeover arena. And their numbers are steadily increasing.

Your teeth are amazingly strong and were meant to last you a lifetime, but they do have their limits. When you have a dental problem and we have exhausted all other choices, an extraction will be the best and least invasive treatment for your tooth. There are several reasons we need to use this extreme treatment: when there is a risk of getting an infection, or periodontal disease is in an advanced stage that we cannot reverse, for example. We might also consider an extraction if there is a cyst in your jawbone, or you have severely crowded or misaligned teeth.

If you have been putting off getting an implant because you are afraid of the recovery, there is nothing to fear. Implants are receiving kudos from former denture wearers. Compared to their denture, patients reported that implants gave them greater levels of comfort, the ability to speak clearly and were very stable. They also liked the better esthetic look of an implant and how easy it is to clean their teeth. And best of all, it was easier to chew with an implant. You are one of an increasing number of people who are choosing an implant over other treatment options. And as for those lingering fears, a few simple precautions will put you in the prime of dental health in a short time.

What do Madison, Wisconsin and Nashville, Tennessee have that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Lubbock, Texas don't? More gourmet coffee shops—perhaps—but that's not the answer.
According to the Center for Disease Control, a survey of 100 cities revealed that Madison and Nashville scored first and second, respectively, for having the healthiest teeth in America! Unfortunately, Philadelphia and Lubbock scored in 99th and last place.
Some of the statistics were shocking because of our perceptions about particular cities. For example, Los Angeles ranked 90th for overall dental health, and its grade was a shocking D. Just up the road, San Francisco ranked 20th and scored a healthy grade B.
For those hearty, health-conscious Pacific Northwest folks, Seattle, Washington ranked 27th with a grade B. Yet, Portland, Oregon (with a non-fluoridated water supply) received a 94 and flunked like Philadelphia and Lubbock.
This data could demonstrate that we need to rethink our perceptions about people and locations, but most importantly, it shows we need to dramatically improve our daily, home oral care programs, especially where there is no fluoride in the water supply.
Your dental health is directly related to your overall health.
We urge our patients to have dental check-ups at least twice each year. During your check-up, we can identify oral problems before they progress to an advanced stage that requires more serious ...
