No Reason to Fear an Implant

If you have been putting off getting an implant because you are afraid of the recovery, there is nothing to fear.

Implants are receiving kudos from former denture wearers. Compared to their denture, patients reported that implants gave them greater levels of comfort, the ability to speak clearly and were very stable. They also liked the better esthetic look of an implant and how easy it is to clean their teeth. And best of all, it was easier to chew with an implant.

You are one of an increasing number of people who chose an implant over other treatment options. And as for those lingering fears, a few simple precautions will put you in the prime of dental health in a short time. Image

Skip the tobacco: Tobacco usage is the leading cause of implant failure. It steals precious oxygen from your body. Tobacco constricts blood vessels, and oxygen needs an unrestricted flow of blood in order to be delivered to all parts of your body and promote healing. This might be the right time to quit tobacco usage altogether! Because of the high risk of implant failure in smokers, we may not include it as an option for many cases.

Put walnuts on hold: Until your implant is secure in your bone and your restoration is firm, chewing hard, crunchy foods is off limits for a period of time. You could unseat the implant or break the crown we placed on top of the implant.

Don't skip your medications: Medications help you heal faster and give you peace of mind. This is no time to stress about pain and discomfort. Your body needs to concentrate its efforts on healing. Image

Don't let your guard down: A nightguard prevents you from clenching and grinding your teeth. This pressure could damage the implant and the restoration. As soon as you are comfortable with the new feel in your mouth, you can discontinue using the nightguard. Image

Be kind to your mouth: For awhile, use a soft toothbrush so that you do not harm the gum tissue while it heals. Use that special mouthrinse or other cleaning aids we recommended. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue, and do not forget to brush your gums, palate and remaining teeth. It is important to keep your teeth free of bacteria and plaque, especially when you have an implant restoration.
